A New Method of Calling Football Plays

Football coaches have a playbook and they give the team an appropriate play to use during the game, but now a new computer model can choose a play during the game. All the coaches need to do is enter in the mathematical and statistical facts of the game and the gameplay situation. Then, the computer analyzes the data and picks a play on the situation. If the coaches enter all the information correctly, the play that the computer picks can be very effective. The computer can even call what both teams should call, on both offense and defense. This computer model will really help coaches and take the stress off them during the games to pick and make play.

In my opinion, I think that the computer model calling football plays is very helpful to the coaches and makes their lives easier, but I think it would be better for the team if the coaches continue to call the plays. Indeed, the model can call good plays and be effective, but the computer may not know the opposing team's strengths and weaknesses. After playing the other team for many years, the coach would know what kind of plays they use and what they are good at. The computer model just simply wouldn't know that. All in all, the computer model calling football plays is a great invention, however I think the coaches calling the plays would be more effective in a game.

The article that I wrote about is from the following website:

  1. Hey Gotmilk,
I totally agree with you about the fact the the computer would not know the opposing team's strebgths or weaknesses, but is there a way for the coach to type them in. Anyway, I think that if the used technology to create the plays then the game would be no fun and probably very predictable. Also if the computer creates the plays, then how would you know whether or not your coach is actually a good coach? How can you tell whether or not he knows how to manipulate a game.
Do any body use these computers now in 2009?
Are they used in our school?

  3. I thought that your blog was pretty interesting. The invention itself seems like it would allow the coaches more time to work on other important things and produce better results. However, I think the computer model would be a little less... accurate. I agree with you - the coach would know more about the strengths and weaknesses of their adversaries and so they would be able to call plays based on those and not just the game play situation. Basically, I thought that this new computer model can save time, but it may not prove to work as well as having a coach call the plays.
Also, I thought your blog was well written and very informative.
